Back in 2014, I read a book called Paper Towns. I’d picked it up because it was a John Green book, and I had really enjoyed both The Fault in Our Stars and Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I had hoped for PT to be as good as TFIOS was, but to be honest – I didn’t really enjoy it that much. My book review was very positive, but since that I’ve had some time to think – and I guess it just didn’t match the feelings I had when I read TFIOS. Still, I wanted to see the movie, and last week I finally did.
I was very interested in the casting when the movie was announced, and I think they made a right choice for Q. Though I did see him as Isaac throughout the majority of the movie, but I guess that’s just the problem with actors being cast in multiple things, ha ha ha! Personally, I wasn’t a fan of Cara Delevigne as Margo Roth Spiegelman, and after seeing her in the movie, I can definitely say I don’t like her. I don’t like Margo as a character, and I didn’t like Cara playing her. Mostly because she didn’t look at all like how I pictured her. (Apparently “Cara Delevingne has dyed her hair from blonde to brown for the part” (from IMDB) but she was still blonde?!)
But just let me talk about Margo for a moment. One day she just decides to LEAVE her family, her friends, her home just because she’s bored? Though her mother doesn’t really care much (wow A+ parenting), I just thought ‘what the heck’, and then she leaves all those clues and when Q finally gets to where she is she’s super surprised he’s there? What else did you expect? You leave without telling anyone, just because, and you are surprised people actually come looking for you? Tssss, honestly Q should just find someone else to love, he’s too good for her. Ugh.
As for the other characters; Ben and Radar were okay, to be honest the actors portraying them looked about fourteen/fifteen (I asked my friends and they agreed with me), but they were both around nineteen? (I don’t know about the actor who played Radar because there’s nothing much on his IMDb page, but I just guessed he was around the same age). I liked Lacey and Radar’s girlfriend (sorry forgot the name), but other than them – and Q – I didn’t really like any characters in this movie.
It’s been a while since I’ve read the book, but I had the idea this movie was very similar to it. The only thing I was really missing was the Sea world scene, I guess they cut if because of the shitstorm that’s come over Sea world lately, a wise choice.
Anyway, I liked the movie, but I just didn’t really like most of the characters that much. I found Ben quite annoying in the book with his talking about girls and the way he called all of them ‘honey bunnies’, and that was a bit toned down in this movie. I liked the road trip they made at the second half of the movie, especially the very quick stop at a gas station (with a very nice cameo, seriously just watch it). Like with TFIOS there was no real John Green cameo – the one in TFIOS got cut and the one in PT was only his voice so that’s a bit of a shame.
The ending of this movie was a bit different from the book, but it was nice still. Yes, I did like the movie, no I didn’t like the characters much. I heard that Looking for Alaska will be made into a movie as well, and I just hope that I’ll like that book much better.. We’ll see!
